IEP and 504 Plan Assistance

Individualized Education Program & 504 Plan Assistance Riverside County CA

It is challenging to deal with the educational system, but it is not necessary to tackle this alone. I am Stanfield Janek, and my specialty is representing and assisting families in Riverside County. My mission at Advocate Associates LLC is to assist your child in gaining the education and services deserved. Now, whether your child is eligible for an Individualized Education Program (IEP) under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) or needs a 504 Plan to provide accommodations under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, I’m here to help.

Difference Between IEPs and 504 Plans

An Individualized Education Program (IEP) is a legally binding plan created under IDEA for students with one or more of the 13 qualifying disabilities under IDEA (e.g., autism, learning disabilities, hearing impairments). An IEP focuses on addressing a student’s unique educational needs by providing instruction, services, and support. In contrast, a 504 Plan offers accommodations and adjustments to assist students with disabilities (such as challenges with walking, learning, or breathing) who don’t meet the criteria for an IEP.

FAQ's

A child must possess one of the 13 disabilities listed in IDEA and needs special education services for eligibility for IEP. Whereas a 504 Plan applies to children who have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, ensuring they receive necessary accommodations.

Typically, a student with an IEP does not need a separate 504 Plan because the IEP contains all the needed accommodations and services. However, in some situations, a 504 Plan is used temporarily for a period until the development of an IEP.

It's also important to bring any relevant documents, such as your child's evaluations, previous IEPs or 504 Plans, medical records, and a list of your concerns and goals for your child. This helps ensure the meeting is productive.
